Hi RCN Folks.
Im currently a FiOS subscriber after being unsuccessful at getting RCN to bring my rate down without cutting services. Anyway, Ill likely be back to being an RCN customer sometime in the next several months, and I have a few questions about what my setup should be upon return. (I know some of the answers are here on the board, but some are dated and some I dont understand)
1. Can you practically pause live TV on a preview? I know that the preview does not have a DVR, but I recall reading that this functionality was on its way. I can see how it could synthetically be possible: if I hit pause on the preview, an available tuner on the Q switches to that channel and starts recording
then the preview seamlessly switches to streaming that paused show off the Q instead watching it live though its tuner.
2. Can you set up a recording from the preview? And can you watch a show on the preview that is currently being recorded on the Q? Being able to us the preview to start recording the show Im currently watching would be an acceptable substitute, if the answer to Q1 is no.
3. I dont fully understand MoCA. My ideal new setup would be a Q, a preview, and a Tivo Stream. My Q and Stream could be hard-wired to my router. Would I need a MoCa adapter, plugged into my router, to have the Q stream to the Preview? If I understand correctly, the Q and Preview have MoCA adapters built in.
3a. I noticed this on RCNs equipment page: An ECB is also required if the TiVo Q is not installed within 6 feet of the modem/router. Does that mean if my Ethernet cable is 30 feet long (to get from my router to my TV) that I cant use that cable and will be required to do a MoCA bridge? I understand if RCN techs are not carrying longer cables in their trucks, but I hope I could use my own, and I thought the physical limit for a single Ethernet cable was over 100 feet
For folks who are wondering, here are my thoughts about FIOS, compared to RCN:
- I cant really tell the difference in download speed on my 50 mbps FIOS versus my old 25 RCN. Upload speed (35) is very noticeable.
- The FIOS apps that let you stream a bunch of channels are a gimmick
.theyre so compressed that resolution is pretty pathetic. The Starz and Showtime apps are neat, as is Watch ESPN.
- Hate the FIOS multi-room DVR. Sluggish, busy, interface. App that lets you control DVR from Ipad is not quite as good as TiVo app. But close.
- Hate the FIOS modem router combo. No 5 GHZ and no WPS, despite their being a WPS button on the unit.
- ESPN 3D looks pretty sad. Old college B-ball games, plus the loss of resolution because of the split-screen transmission method makes it not worth the effort. Once you get used to Blu-ray 3D or VuDu HDX 3D, you cant really watch that split-screen stuff.
Thanks for reading.
