Hi guys,
I've recently changed my office's ISP to RCN from Service Electric. Everything seemed to be going fine until yesterday when our VOIP phones started malfunctioning. After calling the phone company, they ran a test which showed that we were experiencing random latency spikes of upward of 1000ms. RCN came out today and tested the signals and even replaced the modem to no avail. The tech showed me that when the modem is disconnected from our firewall, the pings remain below 20ms, however, when he connected the firewall back to the modem, we started seeing the occasional spikes again.
Nothing has changed on our end except for the ISP change for a couple weeks now so I don't know how this problem would be with our equipment. We are running all brand new equipment including a Fortigate 60E firewall and Xyzel gigabit switch. We have had some massive storms in the area recently, including one which fried a monitor and hard drive.
Basically, I need to know if this is a problem that is 100% on my end and push our IT guys hard to fix it or if it could be a problem with RCN's network or equipment. I was wondering if maybe there was a buffer problem on the modem or something. It's one of those Arris cable modems that I've never been a fan of.
