I've had RCN service in my apartment complex for years, and it has been quite reliable. However, starting the past couple months, about 1-2 times per week for a few hours at a time, I have been experiencing extremely high latency and packet loss, even on the first hops to RCN network equipment. It makes some types of streaming video and gaming unusable, while severely impacting video calls as well.
Right now I'm seeing ping times of 100-300ms with 5% packet loss. Merlin signals all green for now on RF, OFDM, and uplink. Occasionally I have seen the downstream power read out-of-spec high but that doesn't seem to correlate with any problem times.
As far as I can tell there's nothing wrong with my modem itself. It's the RCN infrastructure in the building or local node that's appears to be having the issue.
They've offered to send a tech to my apartment but there's nothing really to see here and I'd get charged $50 for them to observe no problem at that time while they blame my personally owned modem.
Is there a way to ask a network engineer to take a look remotely while the problem is actually occurring (such as right now?)
