In my area (eastern MA), I noticed on a friend's PC that when I ping google.com, I am returned IP addresses belonging to RCN (such as 146.115.8.121, though the address varies). Accessing that address via HTTP brings up what appears to be Google. Using https, though, properly raises a certificate error.
I've tried using different DNS servers such as OpenDNS, but google.com still resolves to an IP address owned by RCN no matter which DNS server I use.
I contacted another local person who uses RCN to rule out malware hijacking, and she experienced the same behavior.
I then contacted RCN technical support, and the representative said she knew nothing about this.
Can anyone else confirm this behavior? Any ideas what's going on?
