I'm just about fed up with RCN and starting to look at my other options. I have the 25/4 cable Internet plan and I'm getting nothing near that during the evenings. I can get close to 20 Mbps down midday during the week, but by the time 7 PM rolls around it's dropped to 5 Mbps or lower. I had a tech out to look at it on evening and he acknowledged that there were issues. He placed an order to have someone get up on the utility pole to check something (construction order?) and after that was done there was no change in performance -- still poor. I called back and they told me they were "escalating" it and would send out a higher level technician. He arrived during the day today, ran some tests that showed it performing well (off-peak hours) and left declaring it all good. I returned home tonight and tested it after he declared everything good and it's still terrible.
I just got off the phone with RCN and they said they were going to "escalate" it again and I was assured that this was a different type of escalation than the first one. I asked some very pointed questions about what would be done if they do indeed determine that there is an oversubscription issue in the area and he couldn't say. Pessimistically, I don't expect them to do all that much. I think they'd prefer to lose one customer than spend the money to do the necessary upgrades to support all the users on this node.
I just ran another speed test while directly connected to the modem via CAT5 and no other network usage -- Max Download Speed: 0.29Mbps!
