I got the gigabit service installed about a week or so back in NYC. I have my own router for VPN etc so I had them switch the device into bridge mode. All worked fine until today; I had to power cycle the modem to move it and now it's stopped working in bridge mode.
After powering up, it comes up and assigns a 192.168.1.100 address to the connected router. I can see the management interface on 192.168.0.1, until the cable network is fully connected (network status goes from "denied" to "allowed").
At that point, it just goes dead to the world. I put Wireshark on it to see what was going on. The modem does not respond to DHCP Discover broadcast from the router. I also tested it with a direct, Ethernet connected laptop to make sure. I see a whole bunch of ARP traffic coming from a Cisco device and some LLDP from what I assume is the modem itself.
If I go into the management interface just while it's connecting and switch it to NAT / 'router' mode, it reboots and works fine. I get a 192.168.1.x address assigned to the WAN port of my router and I have internet connectivity. However, obviously VPN and incoming port forwarding etc. that's setup in my router doesn't work. Switch back to bridge mode and it stops working again.
So basically it works in NAT mode, doesn't work in bridge mode. Telephone techs not able to identify the issue and say it looks OK from their end, but seem not to be able to switch the device mode from their end. Every time I call in I get someone new and they want to run the same "reboot the computer" playbook.
Next callout slot is Weds night, so wondering if anyone had any suggestions or a way to get through to level 2 / level 3.

Big price hike
Just got my bill, $38 price hike!!! Are you freaking kidding me? I have internet, Starz, Showtime, and cable with Premier Entertainment Pack. Dropped phone service this time last year and now I'm up to the same price! I'll definitely be dropping some stuff. No explanation, nothing. Year to date, I'm paying $60 more. Time to do more streaming.

Installing McAfee
A relative of mine has RCN service in NYC, and her bill says that she "has" various McAfee products included for free as part of her service. I've been telling her that, regardless of this, she will need somehow to download and install these products, and probably to activate using a key provided by RCN. That is, just seeing this on her bill doesn't mean that anti-virus is running on her machine.
However she can't find a download link or mail with keys. Should she have received this in an email? Or is there a place on the rcn site that she should look?
Or ... am I wrong? (it has happened before :-) )
Thanks!

[Connectivity] [Connectivity] Cannot Connect to VPN with RCN Gigabit
I am a New York City RCN customer using the required UBEE UBC1301 Modem/Router device. I am very satisfied with the service, except when it comes to connecting to my office VPN. I find that whenever I try, the client connects successfully and transfers a few packets, but after only a few seconds all inbound traffic ceases.
This isn't an RCN or a VPN problem, as my building's public WiFi is also RCN based (300Mbit I think) and it is what I use instead. I suspect the UBC1301 is at fault.
So far I have tried disabling the IPv4 and IPv6 firewalls, disabling the LAN Firewall, and replacing the modem but none of these suggestions have worked. VPN pass-through is enabled (in fact, every single checkbox on that page is checked), and no ports are forwarded.
Has anyone here encountered an issue like this before? Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

TiVo Vox Remote support
I have a TiVo T6 and TiVo mini from RCN. The new TiVo Vox Remote goes on sale next week. Will it work with RCN TiVo boxes?
The new remote is supposed to support Roamio boxes. While the T6 looks like a Roamio, in my experience RCN often holds back useful features and drags their feet on peripheral support such as using the official TiVo app (instead of RCN’s garbage app that logs you out all the time and refuses to remember passwords) or out-of-home streaming via TiVo Stream (I eventually just bought a Slingbox since I couldn’t stand waiting for RCN to Support the same TiVo features that everyone else gets).
So, RCN, will we be able to use this remote?

[TiVo] MOCA POE filter not needed anymore
When my TiVo equipment was installed in my house in 2012 the technician made a big deal about the importance of Point of Entry MOCA filter. Another technician said it was a good idea to filter out the modem. Both of these statements can be confirmed by online articles.
https://www.tivo.com/shop/detail/moca-poe
http://www.ppc-online.com/blog/moca-filters-your-cross-interference-issue-solved
But my friend had a TiVo Preview installed at her house last week. The technician installed an Actiontec ECB 2500C MOCA bridge as the Modem & Router was on a different floor than the TiVo Preview. RCN said the POE filter is no longer necessary because the Actiontec bridge has a filter installed. I cannot confirm by online article.

[Speed] Modem and also modem//router combination unit
Using RCN for years and even with it's sometime quirks, love it. I am going to upgrade to the 1 Gig service for internet and thinking about purchasing my own modem/router combination setup. Doing some research and want to make sure whatever I buy can handle the speed. I know the site has modem suggestions but most seem to be dated.
right now looking at the Motorola MG7550 which seems to offer a nice package at 177.90 on Amazon. Thinking this is the way but open to suggestion if anyone else is using the 1 Gig service and how are the results? Most replies state get two separate units but I probably will not do a lot of fine tuning of separate units so just want something that works and can handle the 1 gig speed. Thanks for any help.

[Equipment] Need advise on getting my own modem
Hello,
RCN is charging me $10/month rental for a Cisco DPC3008 modem which costs $65 retail (and I am sure much less for them). Should I buy this model or is there something better? I do not plan to get the Gigabit service (DOCSIS 3.1) any time soon (only 25mbps or so upload) but if there is no big difference in price why not buy the DOCSIS 3.1 modem, right? Also, I would like to keep the modem separate from the router so that I can upgrade them separately.
Thanks!

Looks like RCN is allowing BYOM for Gigabit now!
I've been holding off on upgrading to Gigabit because they were forcing you to rent a modem.. but looks like that restriction has been lifted now! Self install and BYOM is now available (in Boston at least!).
https://www.rcn.com/hub/help/bring-your-own-modem/
It does mention that the C7800 and MB8600 are not yet supported. I guess this leaves us with the SB8200 and CM1000 as the only compatible DOCSIS 3.1 modems

Late Fees for declined credit card payment
Received an email about a failed autopay payment attempt from rcn.
Updated credit card info and didn't think anything of it until i received an email letting me know the next statement is available and its amount. Statement included 2 months of service and $34 in late fees.
$25 Auto pay denial
$9 late fee
I can understand the late fee, but $25 autopay denial... Give me a break. This isn't a bounced check but a credit card. Customer service reversed the fees but something to be aware of.

RCN IPv6 - anytime soon?
Most ISP have deployed IPv6 in the last few years. Is RCN planning on deploying IPv6 in the near future? Are the even testing or doing pilot runs?
I am doing 6to4 tunneling since 2010 and its working ok but I would really like to cut the lag down. Most of the traffic now seems to be on IPv6 and it would be immensely helpful if we go all native IPv6 rather than hanging on the mercy of 6to4 tunneling.

[E-Mail] RCN Webmail insecure after login
My browser has noticed that after login, RCN's Webmail drops to an insecure connection (http://mail.rcn.com/zimbra/#1).
In 2017, surely this is the result of a configuration error of some sort.
Can someone from the RCN team address this?
Thanks.

[Connectivity] SSH Issues, Connection Timeouts with RCN 1 Gigabit
I've recently signed up for RCN's 1 Gig service, and they came over swapped my router with a Ubee UBC1301 Modem/Router.
I'm having issues SSH'ing into my remote machines, I've kinda came to the conclusion that Port 22 is blocked somewhere on the modem. I have no problem with SSH on my machine, using my other internet connections (like at work, or my phone's 4G via tethering) So this is purely an outbound issue.
Poking around the modem's configuration, there are a bunch of options, but I'm not sure if they are actually doing anything. Gateway > Advanced Settings > Options do show that IPSEC and PPTP are checked, and I've turned off Firewall on the modem. Other than that the Ping diagnostic tool seems to be buggy, leading me to think there are possible issues with the firmware. Perhaps the modem is defective?
I've called tech support asking if there are ports that could be blocked, and I was told there aren't, which makes sense, since I had no issue when I previously had 330Mbit service.
I've did a search and found one other user here https://superuser.com/questions/1211273/github-ssh-connection-hangs with almost the same issue, but there doesn't seem to be any solution.
Any help or suggestions would be great.

[Need Info] Wiring sequence - modem, MOCA, Phone box
LEHIGH Valley RCN subscriber here.
Anyone have correct wiring sequence needed to relocate a modem, and MOCA box from one room to another?
My service enters the house with 2 primary cables, where they are connected to splitters. Phone box is located on this exterior wall connected to cable from a 2 way splitter.
I'd like to relocate modem, MOCA box to basement near phone box and incoming coax wiring and splitter.
I'd like ensure correct sequence that also provides strongest signal to modem.
So...do I...
1) connect one of the two primary incoming cables directly to modem and then use the splitter to feed a cable to the MOCA? Or...
2) connect one of the primary cables to MOCA COAX port and then connect the Modem to the MOCA's outgoing TV/STB port?
Thanks in advance for help.

First RCN maintenance in years requiring building notification
Noticed RCN is scheduled for maintenance for our building over the weekend in NYC. First time I have ever seen a notice since I’ve been living here for many years.
Any idea what is being done? I don’t have RCN service at this time. Building was already serviced by 1Gbps internet and all the normal video channels and phone service.
Perhaps a node split due to internet usage to increase speeds? Was hoping to see full fiber optics to the apartment as Docsis is really a dead end platform.
