Upstream Problem RCN Chicago

About 2 weeks ago, I started having dropouts using my SB6141 White which I could solve by resetting the power on the modem. Soon after that, I could only regain service by unscrewing the coax and rescrewing it. My relevant numbers at that time were: 37 STN, 7 DN, 54 UP I should mention that I've always had a splitter that the RCN tech gave me, but I don't need another line (it's empty). After reviewing many, many forums and posts I've discovered that the UP is too high and DN is not optimal but fine. Also, I have checked the power supply and I have the right one. Removing the splitter got me: 37 STN, 4 DN, 54 UP I then tried a whole bunch of things like using the splitter what another coax attached (but connected to nothing), then switching the coaxes leading into the modem. Initially when I attached the second coax going to nowhere I got: 37 STN, 0 DN, 53 UP This lasted for about 17 hours when it went to 37 STN, 4 DN, 57 UP Right now going directly in (no splitter) I'm at: 37 STN 7/8 DN 50/53 UP From what I've read on the forum, the Motorola Bi-Directional Amp raises the DN by about 10 so this doesn't sound like it would work for me. Also, I'm starting to think that there was a problem at the setup with the levels and that's why the tech installed a splitter, which I otherwise didn't need. Does anyone have any ideas, clues, hints, or suggestions about this issue? Thanks in advance.
