There was an outage in my area last Saturday. There is another one today. RCN acknowledged both.

How Many Downstream/Upstream Channels in the Lehigh Valley?

I'll be moving to the Lehigh Valley soon, so I just wanted to check in to see how many downstream and upstream channels Lehigh Valley customers are currently seeing in their cable modem stats page. I need to buy a new cable modem, and if they're currently only offering 16x4 service or lower, I don't want to spend more for a cable modem that does more than that. In regards to what speed I'm planning to subscribe to, it will most likely be the 50 Mbps plan for now.

Inconsistent upload speeds.

Seeing some strange upload speed test results. I'm on the 330/20 mbps plan. Lately (last 2 weeks?) upload speed tests to il.speedtest.rcn.net show results anywhere from 2-10 mbps. Running a speed test on dslreports shows full bandwidth. No issues with download. Signal levels are fine. Connecting laptop directly to modem yields same results. We noticed the issue when uploading a bunch of things to google drive. In the past uploads would be at almost 3MB (megabytes) per second, now barely 300-400 KB/s. Time of day doesn't seem to matter. Spoke with rcn last night who wanted to roll a truck. I'd say it's more of a network or peering issue. Result of net neutrality??

AFAIK this was the first time I ever was late paying the bill. I've had RCN for years now. I have a list of bills and somehow skipped RCN when I went down my list. They charge $9 late fee....ouch So today I paid last month and this months bill together, which wasn't even due until 4/29. I think the penalty is a bit steep.

Upload speed increase anytime soon?

Loving the gigabit service so far... but the upload is just awful. Really missing the symmetrical speeds I had with FiOS before I moved. Anyone know if RCN is planning to boost upload speeds anytime soon? Even 50mbps would be great.

One sign in for apple TV....why doesnt RCN support it?

I just got an apple Tv and when setting it up was told I should choose my provider and sign in once so in the future I would never need to again when adding news apps...apparently this works for other providers but not RCN,why?

[3DTV] Non-3D TV question

So I'm hoping someone can answer this dilemma... 1. I have a non-3D HDTV and I I throw a 3D Blu-ray in it tells me I need to connect to a 3DTV. 2. If I tune into RCN VOD 3D I can see two images side-by-side which would indicate I could potentially see a 3D image. 3. I tried some passive 3D glasses and no go. So the question is; if I invested in active 3D glasses minus the 3DTV would it work with RCN 3D? Thoughts?

[Connectivity] Chicago - packet loss and speed drop

I've been running fine for a while but in the last 3 months my speed dropped from 120mbit consistently to 50-70mbits at most. Latency is crazy high and I get 5-8% packet drops which makes browsing and gaming miserable. Getting all this from http://il.speedtest.rcn.net/merlin/# Anyone know what to check? I've done the standard powercycle/reboot already multiple times and nothing else changed on my end since I joined RCN. When I call they just tell me I don't have their modem and will cost money to send someone out.

DOCSIS 3.1 on 500Mbps connection?

We just switched to RCN Friday. Our SB6141 cable modem wouldn't work with the RCN 330Mbps server we purchased, so to get going we are currently renting an Arris DG2470. We are not using its Wi-Fi router capability, instead continuing to use our Google mesh system. Unfortunately, the current setup is significantly slower (75-80Mbps download via Ookla Speedtest) than our previous Comcast 150Mbps service (~ 125Mbps download). Looking around, it seems that most available modems have the dreaded Intel Puma 6 chipset. So, I figured perhaps I would get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem like the Arris SB8200. I called RCN to ask about that, who basically said, "nope, we won't allow that." (I won't belabor the interaction with the guy on the phone. Would be willing to discuss via PM or phone if someone from RCN wants to discuss.) Will DOCSIS 3.1 modems do the appropriate protocol chit-chat to negotiate their way into talking with RCN's infrastructure? Failing that, what cable modems do people use with RCN's intermediate tier service which don't use the Intel Puma 6 chipset? (I see this thread: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31108472-Equipment-Buying-a-Modem-for-330Mbps-Service and will peruse it.)

Since 7 p.m. all internet and cable TV has been off. RCN says it's an area-wide outage affecting all of Maryland. Unfortunately no indication of cause or when repairs may be completed. Posted using my Verizon cell phone. Anyone have any further details?

I am intrigued by their promotional offer, I was wondering how would this work. I do not want to fall for something that later in the service, I will have to pay more. Has anyone received the same offer, if so can anyone share their experience.

New SB8200 only bonding 16 downstream channels

Hi all, I just upgraded to gig service here in Chicago yesterday. I bought a new SB8200 modem for this, but it only seems to be bonding 16 downstream channels rather than 32, so I'm only getting 200mbps download speeds. I've tried rebooting the modem several times, as well as performing a reset of the modem. I've also tried using 2-leg and 3-leg splitters (-3.5db and -7db respectively) since my downstream power levels look a bit high. I just contacted RCN this morning and they said my signal levels look fine, and I've got a tech visit scheduled between 4-6pm today. I've attached my signal levels before and after putting on a 3-leg splitter. Any tips to see if I can resolve this on my own and potentially save the $ for a tech visit? Thank you!

[Equipment] When will Motorola MB8600 be supported for BYOM?

I'm in Boston, and Gigabit has been available for a while now. I'm moving and getting a new modem, and while I'm not signing up for Gigabit yet, I'd still like to get a Docsis 3.1 modem. As a side note, I did manage to get them to apply new customer pricing which is nice (I really hate how the longer you stay with them, the more what you pay gets grossly out of line with what new customers pay, and they simply refuse to lower the rates, even when you upgrade to the latest tiers). I've had Motorola modems for a long time, and have always had good luck with them. So naturally I would have bought the MB8600. But it's still listed as not compatible, and seems to have been for over 6 months based on what I read here. What would actually happen if I get an MB8600 anyway and hook it up to 250 Mbps service? Would it simply not work? Be unreliable? Something else? I guess the best alternative is the SB8200.

[Speed] Slow upload speeds

Does RCN throttle upload speeds? I have checked everything and the only conclusion I can come to is they are limiting me to 10mbit. It really sucks because I bought a lot of expensive equipment to run my server based on having 20mbit internet. I've attached a before and after image of the bandwidth. As you can see it was perfectly flat and now it's all over the place and won't go above 10mbit.

[TiVo] Zoom button disabled...why?

So I had a Premiere for years and the Zoom button was a great, quick way to change the aspect ratio. On the new 6 tuner the Zoom button acts as a "last channel" button and you have to work your way though the menus to change aspect ratios, and its a pain. Is there any reason this can't be turned back into it's original function??

3 upstream channels on gigabit?

I seem to now have three upstream channels listed for my Gigabit service, rather than the two that were there the last time I looked. Has something wonderful happened?

Hi I'm on GIG tier. In the last couple weeks, speed tests showed only 200mbps down max. RCN tech came out and couldn't located the issue. Called RCN reps. They reset modem remotely couple times and i'm back at square one. Thanks!

[Connectivity] difference in Speeds

Hey, I had my RCN Service installed yesterday, the dl ul speed has been reliable until when I was seeing fluctuation in my dw speeds in various test sites. I am providing screenshot of the result of each of them. I am puzzled by how the result in Testmy.net dropped so low. I have used each of the site few times to see if the speeds are constant or not. For accurate result, mainly use Dslreports, Testmy.net. ,Speedofme and What is quite surprising is how testmy.net is showing very weak speeds result. All are from NY Server. Yesterday, it showed constant speed after few tests. speedof.me - https://speedof.me/show.php?img=180701142307-8511.png DSLreports- SpeedTest - Always display higher then what expected http://www.speedtest.net/result/7437251648.png Testmy.net - On their test site, I am seeing these result after multiple tests. Test Environment- Firefox, Chrome, incognito/Regular Windows 10, 5ghz network, No Security Addon while testing
