[Connectivity] Chicago - packet loss and speed drop

$

I've been running fine for a while but in the last 3 months my speed dropped from 120mbit consistently to 50-70mbits at most. Latency is crazy high and I get 5-8% packet drops which makes browsing and gaming miserable. Getting all this from http://il.speedtest.rcn.net/merlin/# Anyone know what to check? I've done the standard powercycle/reboot already multiple times and nothing else changed on my end since I joined RCN. When I call they just tell me I don't have their modem and will cost money to send someone out.

Not getting close to 1000mbps

My gfs family just upgraded to 1000 Mbps internet service in the Lehigh Valley. However they are only getting 40 to 60 download speed, and 25 to 30 upload, on all devices. 5ghz and 2.4ghz. RCN gave them the Ubee Gateway. Someone is coming out on Friday, but I wanted to get more info on what the problem could be.The gateway says there are 17 downstream channels and 2 upstream. 16 of the 17 download channels say SC QAM, and the 17th says OFDM with a channel Id of 159.

[Connectivity] Chicago - Upload Speed Problems/Game Disconnects Frequently

In the last two weeks or so, my upload speeds are well below the advertised 20mbps. It dips down to less than 5mbps in many instances. Download speeds are consistently at 330mb or more and ping is low at 10ms. For this particular game that I play (FFXIV), I'm randomly disconnected from the server after only a few minutes of play. Nothing else of note is using up my bandwidth at the time, so I'm at a loss on what the problem could be. I had Comcast before this and haven't experienced issues like this before. I'm hard-wired (using Arris SBG7580AC Modem/Router) and continue to experience issues. I ran a line quality test via this website to the datacenter where the game is hosted and there was no packet loss showing, yet running a pathping on my own machine shows at least 10% or more packet loss to their server with packet loss originating from ntt.net.

What do you guys think about these levels? I recently picked up an SB8200 and have so far experienced some short random disconnects that I didn't with my previous SB6183.

Support can't unpair cable card?

Haven't had to contact RCN support in a while, but this one was frustrating. Just got a new TiVo Bolt to replace a TiVoHD. I moved the cable card to the new Bolt and contacted support. (which by the way, the so-called self-install phone number now just routes to the main help number.) After going through the expected providing them with the card info from channel 994, and waiting on hold for a few minutes, the rep came back and said I need to have a truck roll because they can't unpair the card from the old TiVo! Seriously? Is this just RCNs way of increasing profits, by forcing a truck roll for the most simplest of customer installable items? I asked him if I take the old card to the local RCN office and get a new card, whether that should work, he was pretty vague. He also said that my existing card would not work in a non-TiVo box, his system was apparently IDing my Bolt as some generic cable box. Are there still any tech contacts at RCN that know how to work with cablecards?

[Connectivity] Upload/Outbound problems

Hey guys, I will try to keep it short but this is really stumping. Before I go any further I would like to make a disclaimer that I'm a System Engineer for a Healthcare system and I'm quite familiar with networking(Doesn't mean I don't have brain farts :) ) My father works from home and uploads case mkv files to his work ftp server which is located in Italy on a daily basis. Everything was perfect but starting 2 weeks ago my father mentioned that the internet went down 2-3 times within a hour period and thats when the uploading through any means drastically slowed down to 100-300KB/s. He recently had the 330mbps and upgraded to the 1gig package thinking that the new modem would fix the problem(and he wanted the 1gig download speeds). That surely didn't do the trick and the tech that came said he couldn't do anything about it. We tried on my ISP which is Service Electric and the speeds are normal for transferring via SFTP to his work. [att=1] What have we tried? 1. New modem 2. Firewalls Completely off 3. Hooked directly to modem and tried different ports 3. New cat6 cables even cat7. 4. I brought over 3 server grade 1gb nics, and a 10gig nic with a copper sfp. 5. I brought over my own VM host to test 6. Reset modem to factory defaults 7. I tried uploading to google drive, sftp via winscp, one drive. 8. I even tried plex on their network and tried to download from it remotely no more than 100-300kb/s. I tried to watch the movie and it couldn't keep up with the buffering. I have to bump it down to 2mbps for it to run smooth. The weird part is.. when you do a speed test he gets full download/upload speeds on multiple servers on speedtest.net and RCN speedtest site. Could RCN be throttling single threaded outbound traffic? Is that even a thing? I also noticed when he starts the upload for a good 5-7 seconds the upload speeds are where they are supposed to be then slowly climb down to 100-200kb/s. The one thing that doesn't look right to be is the upload stream. The uncorrected values should not be that high, right? [att=2] [att=3] We have called RCN and they are sending ANOTHER tech out on Sunday but I have a feeling its just going to be a waste of time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Poor Transmit power

I had a four way splitter on my cable (modem, telephone modem, DVR, and an old Motorola STD TV set top box). I noticed that my Transmit Power was kind of low, so I decided to give up the Motorola STD TV set top box, and put an unbalanced three way splitter on instead, using the -3 dB for the modem, and the -7 dB splits for the DVR and the telephony modem But my Transmit Power is even worse. Now it is down to 24.2 dBmV and is in the red zone. How could that be?

RCN set-top boxes - change?

I am upgrading my AVR and moving some equipment around, so I was wondering if there is any reason to exchange my current Motorola DCX3200 cable box for something else from RCN. (It would be a good moment to do that.) I am not particularly interested in recording shows, though I could imagine doing that occasionally — but there is apparently a bottom-end Tivo product that is just a cable box if used on its own offered by RCN. And it's more modern than what I have, for sure. I have occasionally had audio problems with the existing box (though not at the moment), and if one of the other offerings were more reliable in that respect, that would be good. The RCN website is oddly uninformative about their equipment.

Has anybody made the jump with RCN to the voice remote and the Tivo Experience as their calling it? Their YouTube channel has like 6 videos promoting it.

I bought a new TV, so I'm moving my cable card from my old "cable card" TV to a Samsung gx-sm530cf cable box, which will then connect to my new TV. I will need to repair my cable card to the Samsung. Does RCN have a special phone line or website for this? Thanks, John

All three of my RCN email accounts suddenly stopped working on all of my devices (iMac, Windows laptop, iPhone, and iPad). All I get is a pop-up window saying that my mail program(s) cannot access the server imap.rcn.com. Nothing has changed on my side. --John

RCN pgrades TiVo UI

https://www.broadbandtechreport.com/articles/2018/08/rcn-upgrades-tivo-ui.html RCN upgrades TiVo UI August 1, 2018 By BTR Staff RCN has announced the availability of its new TiVo (NASDAQ:TIVO) interface, featuring numerous updates to the platform. Upgrades include a voice command remote control, tailored viewing recommendations, and improved content navigation. Has anyone noticed these new upgrades. Can we go and get new remotes with voice command at the office? I was told by CS that initially it is only being offered to new customers, and you cannot use the MG2 DVR. What surprises me is that it is offering the ability to skip commercials.

Samsung gx-sm530cf cable box

I recently replaced my old DLP cablecard TV with a new OLED TV. Because the new TV does not have a cablecard slot. I purchased a Samsung gx-sm530cf cable box. My intent was to take the RCN-supplied cablecard out of the old TV, insert it into the Samsung cable box and then call RCN to pair the card. The cable box, however, will not recognize that the card has been inserted. Could the box be defective or the card (which is recognized in my old cable TV)? Anyone use this box? --John

RCN's Over the Top Service

RCN has been talking about their Over the Top Service (OTT) for some time, to compete with the flood of OTT streaming services being offered by third parties. Do you suppose it will be similar to Comcast's XFinity Instant TV, whose core offering is an $18 package with the major broadcast networks, including ABC, CBS, CW, Fox, NBC, PBS, Telemundo and Univision.

Hi I'm on GIG tier. In the last couple weeks, speed tests showed only 200mbps down max. RCN tech came out and couldn't located the issue. Called RCN reps. They reset modem remotely couple times and i'm back at square one. Thanks!

I have an SB6183, what will my max speed be until I can get an SB8200 (unless there's a better choice?) I'm assuming not the full theoretical 686mb/s that DOCSIS 3.0 is capable of.
