What do you guys think about these levels? I recently picked up an SB8200 and have so far experienced some short random disconnects that I didn't with my previous SB6183.

[Need Info] RCN Boston DOCSIS 3.1 - downstream channel requirements?

I have 1Gb service from RCN Boston. Just bought an Arris Surfboard SB2800 and RCN provisioned it. Performance is good, I'm getting over 900 Mbps from some speed tests and usually better than 600. However, RCN tech support tells me that I need to open up more downstream channels or my connection will degrade soon. Is that true? The modem has 32 downstream channels. The SB8200 admin page (I would attach a screenshot here but am not able to do that for some reason) shows only channels 1-16 and 159 bonded. Modem status lights shows that I'm getting DOCSIS 3.1 mode downstream. The admin page is read-only, I have no ability to make any configuration changes. I reset the modem once, also had RCN reprovision, no changes. Power and SNR levels downstream for my modem are within limits (see https://arris.secure.force.com/consumers/articles/General_FAQs/SB8200-Cable-Signal-Levels/). Upstream power levels are below the limit but nonetheless uploading is working OK (less concerned about upstream performance). Event log doesn't show anything worrisome (there are some errors, but Google tells me they are minor). RCN tells me that I need to contact the manufacturer (Arris) for guidance on opening up more channels. However, Arris tech support tells me that provisioning is completely under the ISP's control. I'm more inclined to believe Arris on this question. Perhaps I should just ignore all of this and feel good about the performance, but I'm concerned that if performance degrades later I'll be outside of the time window for returning the modem to Best Buy. I see suggestions on the forum that RCN uses only 16 downstream channels in most locations. Are any Boston users out there getting more than that? Any thoughts on what the truth is here?

[Equipment] Lease Time DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network management protocol used on UDP/IP networks whereby a DHCP server dynamically assigns an IP address and other network configuration parameters to each device on a network so they can communicate with other IP networks. What do other people have settings for "Lease Time" for their router? Mine was defaulted at a week, but it seems as if some of my devices were losing their link. It was suggested to me that I shorten it (I arbitrarily chose 12 hours) and the problem seems to have gone away. Googling the subject mostly yielded mostly warning about increasing lease time if you are in a residential environment with few guests so that you have a small number of devices comes and go.

RCN's Over the Top Service

RCN has been talking about their Over the Top Service (OTT) for some time, to compete with the flood of OTT streaming services being offered by third parties. Do you suppose it will be similar to Comcast's XFinity Instant TV, whose core offering is an $18 package with the major broadcast networks, including ABC, CBS, CW, Fox, NBC, PBS, Telemundo and Univision.

[Connectivity] Chicago Upload Issues - Uncorrectable Codewords on Upstream

All, how can I fix my upstream SNR level? I'm only getting about 4-5 mbps upload to RCN speedtests and I'm getting about 3% packet loss for gaming / voip. The line from my wall goes directly to the modem via a -9db tap and the open end has a cap on it. So it's just the cable modem and no TV service on the line. The current screenshots from merlin are attached to this post. A tech came out and put proper caps on the open end of a -12db tap which didn't seem to affect much. Then the replaced the modem with another, which at least brought the downstream power levels down, so the -12db tap was replaced with a -9db tap to increase signal. I'm still having terrible upload speeds, and RCN doesn't seem to have any fixes besides giving me a discount for a slower speed.

Why hash passwords

There was a recent topic on reddit that claimed rcn stores user passwords in a manner that consumer reps can view your full password. Sadly rcn seems to have confirmed this is the case on twitter. It's not clear if the passwords are stored in an encrypted manner but it does not matter as they should be hashed and salted. This just reminds me of T-Mobile Australia https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/04/07/security_roundup/ https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/9i3kaq/rcn_stores_your_online_passwords_as_security/ https://twitter.com/RCNconnects/status/1043616436843945985

Chicago SE Lakeview (Belmont Harbor Area) - Outage

For the last couple of days, I have been experiencing disconnects for a few seconds on my Internet connection. Yesterday afternoon I figured it was time to reboot the modem and my router. After I did so, the modem appeared to boot normally, showing it was online, but the router showed no Internet connectivity. I tried connecting a few other routers I have to see if the problem was the router, but the result was the same for all of them. I called RCN tech support. The person I spoke to said it there was a node problem in my area. I should check back with them in a couple of days. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? Does anyone have any more info, like an ETA for the fix? Thanks!

Anyone have any idea on when Internet service will be restored in Chicago (Lakeview)? It's been out since 9:30 p.m. last night. Called this morning and they said techs were out working on the issue. Nearly 20 hours later and service is still down. There's not a single mention of it on their Twitter page.

Was there a price hike on internet packages in the LV area or something? I shouldn't have been on any promo package, been on RCN for almost 4 years. I just got my new bill today. I've been paying $59.99 for the 155/15Mb package and now without any warning they want $77.99 for the same package. Kind of too much if you ask me.

[CATV] DOGTV

Tried to switch back to RCN as a new customer. Could not find Bravo, Hallmark or other channels that use to be in a "Signature " package. The good news is that now they have DOGTV for $4.99/month. "DOGTV is a TV channel dedicated to dogs as viewers and provides safe content to stimulate, relax and entertain dogs that are left home alone for many hours every day." That's why I did not place my online order. Will RCN ever become people-friendly?

Is anyone else experiencing very slow uploads in Washington DC? It's usually been very stable but since this morning I can only upload like 500kbps. I looked at the merlin page and all looks fine. It seems to be something farther upstream.
