[Speed] Slow upload speed after two technician visits
Hello,
I have the 1000 megabit down, 20 megabit up plan with RCN. I got RCN internet service installed in mid-May 2018. I initially was using a Netgear CM1000 modem which is DOCSIS 3.1 compliant.
On 10/13, my upload speed went from 20 megabits to less than 1 megabit. It happened all of a sudden. I called technical support on 10/14 and they rebooted the modem remotely, but it did not increase the upload speed from ~1.0 megabits. They scheduled a technician visit for 10/16.
The technician visited on 10/16. He checked the signal levels and they were fine. He suggested swapping out my Netgear CM1000 modem for an RCN modem that he had in his truck. He installed that and the upload speed was still about 1.0 megabits. The download speed has always been about 860 megabits. No problems at all with download speed. He tested the speed on his laptop as well as mine and it was 1.0 megabits. This is without my wifi router connected. Just the laptop connected to the RCN modem (Ubee UBC1301).
The technician tried swapping my 10db attenuator for 6db. No difference in upload speed was observed. The technician left the 6db on the modem, and said he would speak with his supervisor and schedule "maintenance" to visit the building. He said I wouldn't need to be present for their visit and that it usually took about 24 hours for them to get on site.
I waited about a week and didn't hear anything from RCN. I called technical support and they said no one had been scheduled. They scheduled a technician visit for 10/27.
When the technician arrived on 10/27, he did the same troubleshooting procedures as the first technician (checking signal strength, cable connections tight, speed test on RCN and checking RCN Merlin). He said everything looked good and he didn't know why the upload speed was slow. He asked why I needed better upload speed. He suggested I visit an RCN local office and pick up one of the "triangular" newer modems they have out. That is where we left it.
I called technical support on 11/1 and they said customers aren't supposed to pick up equipment from RCN and a technician is supposed to do the installs of RCN equipment. He rebooted the modem remotely. I was at work at the time, but he said to retry rebooting the modem when I got home. I explained that I tried that many times, including the two times that the technicians visited.
The upload speed is still about 1.0 megabits, download speed is about 860 megabits. I really need the upload speed to be better, for several reasons including that I telecommute once a week and it lags if I'm streaming video at the same time.
Is there anyone at RCN who can do a more in depth analysis of why the upload speed is so slow? I want to mention that all of the RCN technicians have been super professional and friendly. I'm just looking to solve this issue.
Thanks,
Robert

RCN 1GB Modem Bridge mode access
Hi, I have RCN 1GB service in NY. I was able to access the modem via 192.168.0.1, once I put the modem into bridge mode, my router took 192.168.0.1. How do I access the admin panel on the modem now?

[Connectivity] SSH Issues, Connection Timeouts with RCN 1 Gigabit
I've recently signed up for RCN's 1 Gig service, and they came over swapped my router with a Ubee UBC1301 Modem/Router.
I'm having issues SSH'ing into my remote machines, I've kinda came to the conclusion that Port 22 is blocked somewhere on the modem. I have no problem with SSH on my machine, using my other internet connections (like at work, or my phone's 4G via tethering) So this is purely an outbound issue.
Poking around the modem's configuration, there are a bunch of options, but I'm not sure if they are actually doing anything. Gateway > Advanced Settings > Options do show that IPSEC and PPTP are checked, and I've turned off Firewall on the modem. Other than that the Ping diagnostic tool seems to be buggy, leading me to think there are possible issues with the firmware. Perhaps the modem is defective?
I've called tech support asking if there are ports that could be blocked, and I was told there aren't, which makes sense, since I had no issue when I previously had 330Mbit service.
I've did a search and found one other user here https://superuser.com/questions/1211273/github-ssh-connection-hangs with almost the same issue, but there doesn't seem to be any solution.
Any help or suggestions would be great.

RCN IPTV - Any Experience?
My condo building in Chicago has been bidding out bulk internet/TV to a few providers, one of which is RCN. I'm trying to understand RCN's proposal and it does not match my previous experience with RCN at another property and what I understand them to offer.
I was expecting a traditional coax-based proposal (similar to what Comcast has proposed) but instead, they are proposing an entirely ethernet-based deployment (including symmetrical gigabit internet) with what they are calling IPTV streaming boxes. This is proposed with the same package structure and channel lineup as the traditional offering detailed on their website.
I can't find anything on RCN's site or in further research about what this IPTV solution could be. I am thinking perhaps this is the Tivo Next Gen IP-based solution that RCN signed on for which would eliminate the need for traditional coax/QAM based infrastructure at the property. Does anyone have experience with this offering/product or any insight they might be able to provide?

3 MBPS download. No help from RCN support
Hi,
Wonder if anyone can suggest/help to troubleshoot this one. Recently download is slow as hell. Have a Netgear CM500-100NAS and 250/15 plan. Connected my modem directly to the the very first cable (without splitters and stuff), done power cycle and everything i could. But no result. RCN agents are not very friendly/helpful. Their recommendation is to get new modem or that i dont have recommended 24 channels, but like i'm not even getting 16 working properly, how 24 will help.

[VOD] How to exit OnDemand?
I need to show a friend how to access RCN OnDemand video. The problem is that I have an old RCN cable box (Motorola DCT700) with RCN remote and she has a TiVo with TiVo Series 4 remote. This raises two questions:
1. I'm assuming that once you press OnDemand, the screens will look the same with a TiVo cable box as with an RCN cable box so navigation should be the same. Is that true?
2. How do you exit the RCN OnDemand screen?
My old RCN remote has a button called Exit. Once I press Exit, all I have to do is enter a TV channel number. But her TiVo Series 4 remote doesn't have an Exit button.

Moto/Arris 6121 Cable Modem on RCN -- Chicago
I've used RCN over the years. (1) I have very modest needs -- 25 Mbps service is plenty fine for me. (2) I am price-sensitive and while I prefer RCN as a vendor I have have moved off their service to Comcast/Xfinity from time-to-time when the price-point of RCN becomes significantly higher than that of Xfinity (paying RCN twice the amount per month after several years for essentially identical service just doesn't seem to make sense).
I have a Motorola/Arris 6121. Two, actually. It's a basic modem, without the multitude of channels of a more current modem, but it works perfectly fine with 25 Mbps service. I have used it several times without the slightest issue with RCN's 25 Mbps service. The second unit was used for several years on RCN's 50/75/100 (I forget) Mbps service by my girlfriend who since moved in with me. I am currently using the 6121 without issue with Xfinity 25Mbps service. At one point it was an RCN-approved modem.
I'd love to return to RCN, and am considering doing so within the next month or so. I checked out RCN's current BYOP information, and am troubled to now find this:
-- For "up to 330 Mbps service RCN "recommends" a DOCSIS 3.0, 24-channel modem.
-- "If you wish to use your own modem, and it is less than 24 channels, you can still use it. However, you may not receive optimal RCN internet speeds. Please note these minimum requirements: Minimum requirement for speeds of up to 250Mbps is a DOCSIS 3.0 modem (8 channels down) or better."
So: simple question: will RCN not allow me to use my 6121 with their 25 Mbps service? I even have one on the shelf (the girfriend's) that was recently removed (18 months ago) from RCN 50/75/100 (I forget which) Mbps service, and still contains RCN's software load, and that hasn't since been used with any other ISP.
If RCN is going to force me to purchase a new modem even though my current modem works absolutely fine (and always has with RCN -- even at faster speeds), even though RCN's competitor is not so unnecessarily restrictive, I may have to re-think selecting RCN as my ISP.
Please, no lectures about "future proofing" or "node saturation" or whatever. I know all that. I know that a 6121 works perfectly fine at my location with RCN 25 Mbps service.
@Emilie/ @rcncares do you have some input?

[Speed] Gig Service on Netgear CM1000 - Only getting 330Mbps
So the history is I was paying like 59.99 for 330MBps which was the high tier last year. Fast forward, and today basically 1Gbps is available for 59.99. Seems dumb to pay the same amount of money for less speed. So I went out and bought a DOCSIS 3.1 Netgear CM1000. Went through RCN and hooked everything up. But I"m still only getting like 330MBps even after multiple reboots, reseating cables, etc
Oddly enough on the cable modem I can only see 16x2 channels getting locked. Which seems inconsistent with typical GIG service as I understand (of course I could be wrong on this front I'm just sort of extrapolating from other threads on the subject)
The RCN speed test shows I'm technically provisioned for 1Gig service but seems like the cable modem is stuck on 16x2.
I even pulled off the wierd filters they put on my coax, but that didn't help either.
Is this more or less a provisioning issue on RCNs side that I have to address? I have a tech coming out but I kinda want to be semi-prepared for what needs to get done.
edit: added screenshots of my connection page showing only 16 channels seem to be connecting

[Connectivity] Packet loss/ping spike every 9 mins
My brother recently upgraded us to 1 Gb download speeds as he saw that it was the same price as we were already paying for with RCN. Everything was running smoothly for a week then about 4-5 days ago, I started to get these ping spikes when I was playing games. My ping would shoot up to around 900ms for about 20-30 seconds and everything would go back to normal. I decided to download pingplotter, which showed me consistent ping spikes along with packet loss every 9 minutes on the dot. I tested this on my laptop as well with the same results. I have tried the usual power cycling of my modem and router, making sure the firmware was up-to-date, checking the cable connection from the wall to my modem. I did a bit of digging online for some information and attached two screenshots of some of my signals and power levels of my modem (CM1000) and was wondering if there was anything out of the normal.
TL,DR: Ping spikes/packet loss every 9 mins, did some research into the problem, tried to eliminate some variables, but still clueless.
Any help would be most appreciated!
